the Heart of the cafeteria: Emma Johnson was a staple in Elmwood High School’s lively cafeteria; patrons salivated at the sight of her. Patrons know her very well because of how hardworking she is; it is impossible not to get recognized when she passes one’s table, always with a grin on her face, wishing everyone “good morning” or asking how they have been. She had spent close to ten years working there–waking up early each morning and putting in extended hours daily just to serve them besides feeling fulfilment that comes with an acknowledgement that you are contributing into life of someone else’s child.

Even if her career was demanding, Emma couldn’t speak badly about her job making sure she did it with pride always aware she was changing the world. In her opinion, everyone was to have a hot meal with kindness always in mind and she did so unfailingly.
One day as she served lunch, she saw a man she didn’t know standing near the entrance. He looked somewhat odd among the students and the staff, his eyes moved around until they finally settled on her. He was a tall man who looked tough but had some unique confidence in him. He had well-fitting suiting’s which were quite strange when compared to the way others were dressed.

She was what you’d call a woman of principle, but unlike most of such people, she had the best of intentions. She never tried to show off the fact that she had a good head on her shoulders, although she was perfectly aware of it herself. I am sorry, he said in a low, deep and resonant voice, are you Emma Johnson?
She responded, curious, but careful. “Yes, I am. Can I help you with something?”
“Hi, I’m Michael Harris,” he extended his hand. “I was just admiring how intensively you work. It’s really great.”

Emma’s face turned red. She was surprised by the compliment. ” Thank you. I only do what is necessary. “Michael nodded. “I have been here for a few weeks now watching how you interact with students and staff. You have a way of making everyone feel like they are valued, that is not usual.
Emma smiled as she felt the a warmth that spread through her. “Thank you, Mr. Harris. What brings you here?

“He explained that he was an architect who had been commissioned to redesign the school cafeteria among other parts and was seeking insight into how things operated before the project commenced.
For several weeks after that, Michael was a regular lunch counter visitor, drawing some schemes and having conversations with the personnel. On a regular basis he felt an extraordinary urge to be around Emma, admiring her as she did her daily duties with so much ease and orderliness, despite the fact he did not really know her well enough then. So they grew accustomed to one another discussing some stories during her short coffee breaks before returning back to work.

Three years had gone by since Michael’s wife died, and he had indeed been a widower all this time: a fact Emma came to know. Michael had engaged himself in work much, with which he tried to handle the grief that had overcome him. However, when she came into his life, it was as if meeting another person entirely; somebody true to themselves regardless of difficulties, who was kind-hearted and diligent at what she did. After a rough day at the office, Michael asked Emma for a dinner date in the evening. Emma wasn’t sure whether it was the right thing to do but then Michael’s words overcame her hesitation.

Turning point has been manifested when sweet dinner was served. Hours were consumed conversing about their respective aspirations, future dreams together with apprehensions felt withing themselves. It was then this instant that Emma revealed her hidden treasures which were under the exterior aspect of confidence displayed by Michael during that moment; he appeared like a tough guy but inside him some pains run deep but still he managed to let out himself once more. Time passed by and their bond grew stronger and…Michael finished his project that involved constructing the new cafeteria which would stand even as a mark for his innovativeness but beyond anything else; it became a place where she would ever remain admirable and lovely.

One cool fall evening-time, Michael was walking back from school with Emma and he suddenly stopped to hold her hand. He said, ‘You mean so much to me that I don’t know what I would do without you.’ His tears began overflowing at that point as they rolled down his cheeks. The only person through whose eyes these tears flowed was the same person who now looked like she was shocked by what he had said. ‘Emma, you have completely transformed my life. Your strength and kindness showed me that one could still find love. Would you marry me?’ he asked. Emma’s eyes were filled with tears as she nodded her head in agreement. ‘Michael yes’. The only witnesses to this were those teachers that had helped her during the difficult days leading up to their marriage day as well as some students whom she had come across in this life journey which took place outside campus boundaries.
